PROGRAM OF FESTIVAL: 1 - 23 AUGUST 2010 |

Painting Exhibition, Music Nights and Puppet Theater are harmoniously combined again this year in the eight events included in the program of Megaro Gyzi Festival 2010. The festival will take place from August 1st until 23rd at Megaro Gyzi Cultural Centre (near the cable-car entrance in Fira, Santorini), under the artistic direction of Yannis Papaconstantinou.

SUNDAY 1/8/2010, 21:00: PAINTING & ENGRAVING EXHIBITION |

"Sea Aroma"
The festival lifts curtains on August 1st with the opening of a painting and engraving group exhibition, titled "Sea Aroma", in which five young but distinguished artists, all aged 35-40 years old, participate. Tania Dimitrakopoulou, Panos Kokkalis and Kostas Pappas exhibit painting works (oils, acrylics and watercolors), while Kleves Krisiko and Dimitris Tsiroyannis exhibit engraving works (woodcuts and etchings). Morphoplastic searches of the artists with images of the sea constitute the theme of the exhibition, which is curated by Yannis Papaconstantinou, artistic director of Megaro Gyzi.

The musical journey of the festival begins on 4/8 with Rita Antonopoulou, a young singer who has won the audience with her vocal abilities, her interpretation and her wonderful scenic presence. A key collaborator of famous Greek composer Thanos Mikroutsikos for the last three years, and of famous Greek composers Mimis Plessas and Stamatis Kraounakis previously, she travels us in a musical compilation for piano and voice, which will delight the audience. She interprets beloved songs of some of the more important Greek composers but also foreign songs and songs from her personal discography. Together with her on the piano is the excellent musician Akis Mouhlianitis.

Young soprano Eleni-Lydia Stamellou and the pianist Marios Kazas, two promising awarded artists, transport us with well-known pieces from the movies and the musicals ("west side story", "my fair lady", "the phantom of the opera", "Evita", "the wizard of Oz", "the sound of music" etc.). Eleni-Lydia Stamellou, daughter of famous Greek singer Aliki Kayaloglou, studied in Freiburg, Vienna and Bologna. She gives recitals with great success mainly in Germany and Greece interpreting a wide repertoire which includes pieces from opera, oratorio, operette, lieder and musicals in nine languages.

"When red thread was lost in the big forest"
On 10/8 a show for our young and elder friends, where the theatre and the puppetry marry escaping into the magical world of fairytales. The group of puppet theater and narration of popular fairy tales Ftouxelefteria, with Angeliki Gounaridi (puppet animation of dolls and objects) and the actor Kostantis Mizaras (narration and guitar), presents the play "When red thread was lost in the big forest". A puppet-theater show and storytelling of folk tales with live music and songs. Dolls, objects and people encountered in a world where fear does not exist, in the world of Greek folklore and music.

Through his outstanding international recordings for ECM, he has created a special and identifiable personal musical style by mixing elements of classic, jazz and ethnic music.

Morfo Tsaireli, accompanied by a 5-member male band, presents the musical show "1 woman ... 5 men" unfolding different aspects of her explanatory physiognomy in a multileveled show, which is distinguished by freshness and spontaneity. An unpretentious voice that sings with honesty aiming directly at the soul. She proposes a sweet night with a musical collage, which travels us from Manos Hadjidakis to Edith Piaf, from Pink Martini to Stamatis Kraounakis, from Georges Moustaki to Doors and from Kurt Weil to Michel Legrand passing from Apostolos Kaldaras and Mikis Theodorakis. Because music has no borders!

Giorgis Christodoulou & Cabaret Infantil
Giorgis Christodoulou and Cabaret Infantil perform personal songs of Giorgis Christodoulou, met with the sounds of cabarets of Paris, the swing of the underground clubs of New York and dance with the rhythms of wandering musicians of Barcelona. It includes Greek and foreign repertoire sounds like pop, bossa-nova, mambo, swing, cha-cha, and expressive ballads with unexpected adaptations of Spanish and French songs as well as of old Greek songs of the ΄50s and ΄60s, which are made unrecognizable by obtaining a swing sound.

Dimos Dimitriadis Jazz Quartet - New Play
The Megaro Gyzi Festival 2010 is concluded on August 23rd with one of the most completed Greek musicians of jazz, the saxophonist Dimos Dimitriadis. He is accompanied by two extraordinary musicians of the younger generation with global presence, Lefteris Kordis on the piano and Petros Klampanis on the bass. They represent the current global face of jazz, living and appearing in New York. The band completes with the acclaimed drummer Alex-Drakos Ktistakis.
